Building your personal brand isn’t just a one-and-done. Your brand is a constantly evolving entity that needs to be monitored, managed, and cultivated over time.
But what does that mean for black executives who already feel established in their careers? It means taking your personal brand to the next level – beyond the C-suite.
It’s no secret organizations aren’t exactly loyal to their employees. This can be especially true for women and minorities. But when you have a strong personal brand, you’re seen as someone with authority and credibility within your organization and beyond. You’re also more likely to be heard and taken seriously when you voice an opinion.
As black women, we’re often overlooked and undervalued in the workplace. Developing a strong personal brand is essential to getting ahead – and making our voices heard.
Here are five tips for taking your leveling up your personal brand:

1. Keep Your Brand Relevant
As your career evolves, so too should your personal brand. What worked for you in the early stages of your career might not be as effective later on.
One way to do this is to make sure your online presence reflects your current position and responsibilities. Update your bio, headshot, and social media profiles on a regular basis to ensure they accurately reflect who you are and what you do.
2. Never Stop Learning
Seek out opportunities to learn new things, whether it’s taking on a new challenge at work, attending a conference or seminar, or even just reading industry-related articles and blog posts. The more you know, the more valuable you’ll be – and the more people will take notice of your personal brand.
3. Get Involved in Your Industry
Participate in industry-related groups and forums, or join professional organizations related to your field. This will help you network with other professionals and stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends.
If possible, seek out speaking opportunities or write articles or blog posts related to your area of expertise. The more you put yourself out there, the more likely people are to take notice of you.
